Brand Story
The story of Esmerk began in 1975 when the company’s founder, respected Finnish journalist Kari Salonen, had a unique idea that could help the whole business sector: Monitoring the news continuously and systematically in order to be able to fully understand the news and its consequences.
We do not think it was a coincidence that Esmerk was born in Finland. There is something in the Finnish mentality and nature that still describes Esmerk very well. Finns may not speak that much, but what they say, is always thoroughly thought through, and if we say something, we really mean it. Finns don’t have a strong culture of small talk, and that has led to a very accurate and precise form of expression. Whenever you need an honest and objective opinion on something, ask a Finn. On the other hand, everyone that has known a Finn long enough, knows that there’s a lot of inner warmth behind those blue eyes. All these elements have a strong relevance to our service.
Back in the 1970s Finland was an isolated country in the north, still recovering from the consequences of World War Two. However, with hard work, together with innovations and new technology, Finland has slowly but steadily opened up and become one of the most successful and respected countries in the western world. The same goes for Esmerk. Since 1999 Esmerk has been a proud part of Sanoma Group, a strong European media company. We follow the media from 140 countries in 30 different languages and most of our employees come from outside Finland.
